Granite Sink Reviews

Although a granite sink is not typically found with granite countertops, it is one of many options for a kitchen or bathroom sink when you install granite counters.

A real granite kitchen sink or granite composite sink can be heavy and bulky - see What is Granite and Marble to learn more.

A granite bathroom sink, many times, is a vessel bowl that sits on top of the stone countertop.

Sinks in the kitchen usually fall into three categories . . . undermount sink, drop-in sink, and apron or farm sink.

Granite Composite Sinks

The hottest new sinks for granite are composite sinks such as Swanstone and Blanco Anthracite.

These sinks blend in well with granite countertops and, just like quartz countertops, they have the added benefits of chip, heat, and stain resistance. Swanstone sinks come in three colors - Nero (black), Espresso, and Champagne.

Undermount Sinks

Undermount sinks sit below the surface of the granite countertops attached to the underside of the granite with silicone and mechanical attachments (clips).

This type of sink shows off your granite since the hole in the granite has polished sides that are visible.

An undermount sink can be stainless steel, enameled cast iron, or steel, or granite composite.  The granite composite sinks, such as Pegasus brand, are molded from granite and resin but are not considered true granite sinks.

Stainless steel undermount sinks are the most common bowl used with granite countertops.  They function well and are reasonably priced.  See best faucet for granite countertops for faucet selections made specifically for granite counters.

Drop in Sink

Drop-in sinks or self-rimming sinks as they're also known are used with granite countertops as well.  Drop-in stainless steel sinks are typically not chosen for granite countertops.  But enameled iron or steel sinks are.  They are usually white, almond, or black and have a glossy finish.  They are also quite heavy.

Apron or Farm Sink

Apron sinks can be made of stainless steel, enameled steel, soapstone, fired clay, and granite.  Apron sinks were common in farm houses years ago and offer a traditional, old-fashioned look in your kitchen.

A cost saving advantage I have found with using apron sinks, is that you can afford granite in a small kitchen using granite remnants or leftovers from granite slabs.  The apron sink design does not require continuous lengths of granite or a front rail of granite at the sink.  You merely have two small seams at the rear of the sink, so it’s actually aesthetically pleasing.

For older homes with small kitchens, these sinks may be the best choice.

Bathroom Sink

In the bathroom, both undermount and drop-in sinks are common.  They are generally made of ceramic or china material.  For a contemporary look, I have seen undermount stainless steel bathroom vanity sinks.

Vessel bowls are currently a popular style.  Made out of a variety of materials, these bowls can sit on top of the countertop or sit down in the countertop.  A vessel style sink bowl can be polished or rough on the outside.  They are typically made from solid blocks of granite.  You can also find these sinks made of onyx.

Granite Sink Care Guide

Wash your sink using warm water and a soft cloth, sponge or Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. You can use non-abrasive liquid cleaners and detergents as often as you use the sink. Hard water, calcium and lime deposits can be removed with white vinegar on a paper towel rinsing after 20 minutes.

To remove discoloration, restore the luster, provide a seal between the sink and outside elements, or to help make cleaning easier and allow you to go longer between cleanings, try MB-19 Stainless Steel Wipes. Go to MB Stone Care.

Cleaning stainless steel sinks requires similar but different care.
